World Breastfeeding Week 2025: Invest in breastfeeding, invest in the future.
World Breastfeeding Week takes place from August 1st to 7th, and this year’s theme is ‘Invest in breastfeeding, invest in the future’. The DHF is proud to support this important week and highlight the benefits of breastfeeding for both baby and mother, especially its positive impact on oral health.
Breastfeeding provides all the nutrients your baby needs in the right proportions and helps support healthy development. It also plays a role in protecting against early childhood tooth decay.
As part of your baby’s health journey, it’s important to include oral care from the very beginning. Healthy baby teeth support speech, nutrition, and confidence, and many baby teeth remain in place until the age of 10 or beyond. Starting good oral hygiene habits early sets the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
Top Tips for Supporting Your Baby’s Oral Health While Breastfeeding:
Breastfeeding up to 12 months or longer is associated with a reduced risk of dental decay.
After feeding, especially at bedtime, wipe your baby’s gums with a clean, damp, soft cloth.
When the first tooth appears (usually around 6 months), begin brushing with a small soft toothbrush and water, twice daily.
Avoid toothpaste for children under 2 unless advised by your dentist.
Book a dental visit by your baby’s first birthday to get professional advice and build confidence in caring for your child’s teeth.
