Don’t Trick Your Teeth! Halloween Oral Health Tips

30 October 2025

Don’t trick your teeth!

Halloween is a time for fun, costumes, and of course treats! While it’s perfectly fine to enjoy a few sweets, the Dental Health Foundation is reminding families “Don’t Trick Your Teeth!” this spooky season. With a few simple habits, you can enjoy your Halloween fun and protect your smile.

1. Choose Treats Wisely
Sticky, chewy sweets — like toffees, caramels, and gummies — cling to teeth and can increase the risk of tooth decay. Opt for chocolate instead — it melts away quickly and is easier to rinse off. Sugar-free gum can also help clean the mouth and stimulate saliva.

2. Time It Right
Try to enjoy sweets as part of a meal rather than snacking throughout the day. Eating at mealtimes helps neutralise acids and reduces how long sugar stays on your teeth.

3. Drink Water, Not Sugary Drinks
Encourage children to drink plenty of water, especially fluoridated tap water if available. It helps rinse away sugar and food particles while strengthening tooth enamel. Avoid fizzy and sugary drinks that can cause enamel erosion.

4. Brush Before Bed
After a night of trick-or-treating, make sure everyone brushes their teeth for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste before bed. This removes any lingering sugar and bacteria that can cause cavities overnight.

5. Make Oral Care Fun
Turn brushing into part of the Halloween fun — use themed toothbrushes, play a two-minute Halloween song, or have a family “fang-cleaning” challenge!

6. Balance and Moderation
Halloween comes once a year — it’s okay to enjoy it! Just remember to balance treats with healthy habits and regular dental care.

Halloween should be full of fun, not fillings. With a few simple steps, families can enjoy their treats and keep their smiles healthy. Remember — don’t trick your teeth!
