A Code of Good Practice for Promoting Healthier Events

The Cardiovascular Health Strategy "Building Healthier Hearts" (R.O.I.), recommends that "health service institutions should act as models of good practice".

These guidelines have been developed to ensure that we promote good practice when organising events such as conferences, courses, official launches, committee meetings and AGMs.

  • Water, milk and fruit juice (unsweetened) will be available in addition to tea and coffee.
  • When a hot main course is being served, a hot option will be available for those with special dietary requirements.
  • Decaffeinated coffee and herbal teas will be provided as an additional choice.
  • Fresh fruit will be available.
  • All meetings will be wheelchair accessible.
  • People who are deaf or have a hearing impairment should have the facility of a loop system or an interpreter.
  • Written materials and other media should be appropriate for people with a sight impairment.
  • People from ethnic communities should have an interpreting service as appropriate.
  • It is the responsibility of the organiser of the function to ensure that the premises used complies with Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Mobile phones will be switched off during events.
  • Reasonable breaks should be factored into all events
  • Fire escape routes (exits) will be identified at the beginning of each event.
