'Winning Smiles' - Children's Dental Health Awards 2003

Dr Mary Ormsby Principal Dental Surgeon, NAHB presented achievement awards to pupils and staff at Our Lady Immaculate Junior School in Dublin.

It was smiles all round as Dr Mary Ormsby, Northern Area Health Board presented achievement awards to Ms Egan’s Class, Second Class, Our Lady Immaculate Junior School, Darndale, Dublin 17, on Wednesday 17th December 2003. Dr Ormsby praised the school and the pupils for their hard work in achieving excellence in dental care and active participation in this research initiative.

The awards day in Our Lady Immaculate Junior School was part of the ‘Winning Smiles’ research initiative, who’s broad aim is to teach children basic oral health care in a fun and exciting way. Materials have been designed to encourage the participation of all children in the class, and to reward them for their participation and achievements. Children received medals and certificates, while the winning class received the Winning Smiles Cup.

Dr Ormsby paid special tribute to the school, the principal, Ms Patricia Slavin and the 2nd Class teacher, Ms Egan, in recognition of their participation in this evaluation of the ‘Winning Smiles’ oral health promotion school based programme. She congratulated the teachers, parents, and dental team involved, and also thanked the Dental Health Foundation for their efforts in promoting oral health in the school setting.

This initiative is part if an All Island Oral Health Promotion Project facilitated by the Dental Health Foundation, Ireland and funded jointly by the Northern Ireland Health Research Board and the Health Promotion Unit, Department of Health and Children, Republic of Ireland. The steering committee overseeing this research includes representatives from; Dental Services, Northern Area Health Board; Oral Health Services Research Centre, UCC; Queen’s University, Belfast; Eastern Health and Social Services Board, NI; Health Promotion Department, South Western Area Health Board; National Parents Council Primary; Health Boards Executive, The Programme of Action for Children; King’s College London; Dental Health Foundation, Ireland
