Launch of the 'Endocarditis Prophylaxis Identity Card', marking the 'Saint Apollonia Annual Event'

8 Feb 2002

Link to information on Saint ApolloniaPress Release - 2pm Friday 8th February 2002The Dental Health Foundation, in association with the Dental and Cardiology Departments, Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, launched an ''Endocarditis Prophylaxis Identity Card' today to mark the Dental Health Foundations 'Saint Apollonia Annual Event'.In Ireland about one baby in a hundred is born with congenital heart disease. These children are at risk of developing infective endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart, from bacteremia induced by certain dental procedures and from chronic poor oral health. It is therefore extremely important that children with congenital heart disease attend a dentist from an early age for regular preventive and routine dental care. When these children attend paediatric cardiac clinics in Dublin and in Cork their parents will now be given a "Prevention of Endocarditis" card by the paediatric cardiologists. The "Prevention of Endocarditis" card has been developed to inform the dentist of the child's congenital heart lesion and the antibiotic prophylaxis regimes which are recommended prior to undertaking dental procedures that results in bleeding. The martyrdom of Saint Apollonia the patron Saint of Dentistry, took place in AD 249 and the Dental Health Foundation is delighted to mark the 'Saint Apollonia Annual Event' with the launch in Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin, of this important initiative.ENDS
