Today is World Menopause Day. 

Do you know the possible oral health impacts of the menopause? A recent study by Delta Dental’s Senior Oral Health and Menopause Report for 2023 suggests that the majority of women over 50 are not aware of the links between menopause and oral health, with 70% experiencing oral symptoms they do not realise are related. 

The following are some of the symptoms that can be associated with menopause; 

  • Reduced saliva production
  • Dry mouth Increased risk of tooth decay
  • Increased risk of gum disease
  • Changes to jawbone density
  • Receding gum lines

If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms or have any other concerns, make sure to talk to your Dental team. 

It is important to prioritise your oral hygiene routine. Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and a soft/medium toothbrush. Use floss or interdental brushes to clean between the teeth every day and visit your dental team for regular check ups.
